ST. FRANCIS APPOINTS NEW PRINCIPAL

Rev. Michael J. Connor, O.S.A., President of St. Francis School announces the appointment of Charles C. Pilney, Jr. as Principal of St. Francis School.

Bishop Joseph Imesch and Sister Helen Jean Janilonis of the Diocese of Darwin, have confirmed the appointment.

Mr. Pilney comes to St. Francis after serving as the principal of Central Catholic High School in Hobart. The appointment completes the administrative team at St. Francis. His hiring coincides with the completion of our comprehensive, long-range strategic plan. With our key administration structure now in place, we will continue moving forward toward our goals.

The school is grateful to the principal search committee under the direction of school board member John Grayson. A comprehensive nationwide search was conducted for the position and our volunteer committee worked tirelessly to find the right person for our St. Francis Family.

Next week is National Science Week.

On Monday, St. Francis will be launching the "Young Scientist Week" program that is focused on immersing students in the fun and challenge of scientific research. St. Francis student Timothy Wilson won the National Young Scientist Contest last year based on a project he began during Young Scientist Week.

SCHOOL INTERNET GUIDLINES ADOPTED

St. Francis School is committed to using new technology to further our children's learning experience.  Last year, with the help of the Catholic Education Office, St. Francis installed six computers with broadband connectivity in our new Computer Learning Lab.  The school recognizes, however, that new technologies often bring with them new responsibilities. As such, St. Francis School has adopted a Student's Internet Code of Conduct.

To ensure a positive learning experience, please be sure that you and your child review and understand the following guidelines:

  • be responsible computer users, and take great care of computer equipment in the school
  • not access, keep or send anything that they wouldn't want a parent or teacher to see
  • notify the teacher immediately if they come across content or receive communication from someone that is offensive, inappropriate or makes them uncomfortable
  • only use the Internet when supervised by a permanent class teacher in class time
  • only use the Internet to access information which is relevant to school work and under a teacher's guidelines
  • not give out personal details about themselves, their family, teachers, or anyone else while using the Internet

Opening School Mass

On 22nd February 2002, we had our Opening School Mass. At this mass everyone in  Learning Group 1 acted out the bible story 'The Road to Emmaus'. This story is about when Jesus met and walked with his friends to the village called Emmaus. This story talks about Christian hospitality and our very own welcoming nature.

Everyone in the story participated in the mass by either singing, acting, reading or answering questions. Our Opening School Mass is always an important event in our school year and we thank everyone who helped make it successful.

CHOIR NEWS

Special thanks to our committed group of children who attend choir each week.

We have learnt new songs and look forward to performing them. The first occasion will be for Grandparent's Day on Friday 30th of August. As part of the liturgy celebration the choir will lead " A Family Prayer". This is also to be sung at the closing Mass for Family Week, Sunday 1st of September. We have also been asked to visit "Golden Years" to entertain during the month of September (the date still to be finalised). A separate note is being sent home with choir members. Children have also received the words for "A Family Prayer" so they can learn the word by heart for these occasions.
